Profile choice

At Grotius College, we carefully guide students in making the right profile and study choice. We understand that choosing a profile is an important step in a student's school career. Therefore, we offer comprehensive support to ensure that each pupil makes a choice that suits his or her talents, interests and future plans.

Our mentors and deans are on hand to help explore the different profiles and related subjects, and provide tailor-made advice. We also offer various information moments and activities to inspire students and give them insight into possible subsequent studies and professional directions.

Profile choice

Profile choice

In the third year at Grotius, you choose a profile and a corresponding subject package. At the mavo, you take your exams in seven subjects, but you can also choose six if you are more comfortable with those.

You can choose from Dutch, English, German, Spanish, Economics, History, Biology, Physics, Fine Arts, Music, Mathematics, Sport & Exercise, Exercise, Sport & Society. For Mathematics, English, Dutch and the compulsory profile choice subjects in upper secondary school you will have three lessons a week, all other subjects two.

Study choice

Study choice

At Grotius we take enough time to see which study suits you and what you can or want to do with it later on. We have planned various activities to introduce you to the various study programmes and how you can find your way around them.

You will be guided by the dean. Of course, we also ask you to participate in open days and walk-in days of various studies and programmes outside school hours. In the third year at The Grotius you will do a work placement in preparation for your choice of profile.

Student finance

Student finance

The cabinet wants to reintroduce the basic grant in higher education for all students in the 2023-2024 academic year. Students who start their studies then will thus benefit from a basic grant from their second year of study, if they meet the criteria for it.

The cost of study life is different from that for schoolchildren. If a person is going to study away from home, the costs can be even higher. For an overview of the costs per month (approximately), consult the Nibud website. There the costs are extensively calculated and explained. Finally, there is duo's Calculation Tool, which can be used to calculate the amount of study financing and answers the most frequently asked questions on study financing.

Selection programmes require extensive admission, often consisting of several rounds. Find more information on the website of studychoice123.

For programmes with additional requirements (art school and sports training), the requirements differ from one programme to another. Check the provider's site for more information. You will often be asked for a portfolio. Prepare well in advance for this. For other programmes, matching is used. Colleges and universities work with intake interviews. During these interviews, they check whether the student has a good idea of the study programme and whether the student has the right motivation. On this site you can find information on study choice and admission.

To find out whether a programme is a draw study and from when you can apply, visit the following site. You can find here the matching procedure of many colleges and universities.
