Review

At Grotius, we assess and test in a way that focuses on both the learning process and the final results of students. Our approach combines formative and summative assessment methods to identify and adjust student progress throughout the school year.

Formative assessment: making learning visible

For us, formative assessment is a continuous process aimed at improving learning. This means that we continuously collect information on where the student stands in relation to the learning objectives, without any grades attached. This helps us make timely adjustments and respond to pupils' individual needs. We use several checkpoints in lessons to see where students might get stuck, so we don't wait for a grade to be given, but take immediate action.

Summative assessment: monitoring progress

In addition to formative assessment, we test summatively to monitor and record pupils' cognitive levels. Four times a year, pupils receive a grade to measure their achievements against core objectives and attainment targets. This provides a clear picture of their performance in relation to the learning objectives and reference levels.

Flexible and targeted adjustments

With our focus on both formative and summative testing, we ensure that we can make timely adjustments, making students better prepared for testing moments. Issues that become visible after a test week, we try to identify them earlier in the process so that students do not get unnecessary fails. In this way, we build an effective learning environment in which every student has the opportunity to perform at their best.
